Introduction
Caring for and working with children and young people with trauma is deeply rewarding, but it can also take a toll on us. Terms like vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout are often used, but what do they really mean? How can we and our organisations recognise the signs and respond? It is essential to prioritise self-care by integrating it naturally into our daily lives, without it feeling like yet another task on a to-do list.
This workshop will create a purposeful space for us to reflect on presentations of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, and how our work and care of others impacts us. Drawing on the Healthy Mind Platter, this workshop features reflective activities for participants to identify their areas of challenge and develop a self-care plan that works for them. Finally, we will explore the organisational supports that can prevent and protect staff from the impacts of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.
About the facilitator:
Belinda, our Senior Manager of Practice Leadership and Development, is passionate about self-advocacy, rights-based practice, and ensuring collaborative, strengths-based teamwork. Belinda is a social worker with over twenty years of experience working in trauma, out-of-home care, and youth justice.
